Halaqas, relational subjects, and revolutionary committees in Syria

Abstract Through an ethnographic account of Syrian halaqas (Sunni religious circles) from the 1980s until 2011 revolution, this article argues that have a revolutionary potential. The analysis demonstrates circles are spaces self-transformation heterotopic qualities. Darayya halaqa studied here is space where present and future collapsed: in which selves societies already enacted. This temporal collapse thus simultaneously scalar one, for through emergence relational or unbounded subject, project being performed. is, moreover, without preexisting program its members seek to implement distant future; it rather perpetually making discussions actions happening within it.
